Tractor - H.V. McKay, Sunshine Model A, 1918 Object Reg. No: ST 037902

Summary:
Sunshine Model "A" tractor manufactured by H.V. McKay Pty Ltd, of Sunshine, Victoria, about 1918.

Patented in 1916, the tractor was designed as the propulsion unit for a self-propelled stripper harvester, or to be used independently. The tractor is powered by a sideway-mounted 4-cylinder, four-stroke 27 h.p. petrol/kerosene engine mounted east-west made by the Continental Motor Corporation, United States of America. The tractor has three forward speeds and one reverse. A Model "A" was tested in Australia's first tractor tests held at Werribee in 1918.

It is not certain how many model "A" tractors were made; a company publication in 1949 suggested that "quite a number were sold, including one which was exported to Egypt...". One other example is known to survive in Queensland. McKay also manufactured a model "O" tractor with a more conventional north-south engine and front radiator.
